ISO 6432: Air pneumatic cylinder standards

Pneumatic fluid power -- Single rod cylinders -- 10 bar (1000 KPa) series -- Bores from 8 to 25 mm -- Mounting dimensions

China PEOPLE pneumatic component designs, manufactures, develops and distributes technologically advanced ISO 6432 product to the global market. Has it all technology, ISO 6432  products, service, support, and a commitment to providing technical ISO 6432  to our customers.

Some of the North American manufactured "throw-away" - non-repairable - type air actuators and cylinders are not manufactured to any known, industry-wide standard.

If you purchase a 3/4" bore size air cylinder with a given stroke length from one vendor, there's no guarantee that if you purchase the same bore size and stroke length cylinder of another brand, that they will be interchangeable in terms of rod diameter, port size, or mounting footprint.

On the two cylinders, thread diameters and rod threads may differ, mounting footprints may even completely change, in short - if you don't buy the same brand again - you might have to alter how you mount the air cylinder, and how you connect it to the work piece to make the new cylinder work.

ISO (International Standards Organization) is a European body who's mandate, among many other things, is to bring standard and common specifications to industrial goods.

ISO-6432 is the standard that applies to a certain type of air cylinder, typically what we've come to know as throw-away or non-repairable type cylinders as shown in the picture.

ISO 6432 air cylinders, regardless of what company manufactures them, will have standards critical dimensions.

ISO 6432 : Establishes metric mounting dimensions for cylinders as required for interchangeability of commonly used hydraulic cylinders. Includes the bore sizes as follows: 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 mm. Gives the following mounting styles: MR3, MP3, MS3, MF8 (tables 2 and 3, figures 2 and 3). Figure 1 and table 1 contain the basic dimensions.

Rod diameters and rod threads will be common for like bores
Nose mount or rear mount threads will be the same
The air port sizes will be common for like bores
The mounting hardware, while possibly appearing to be different, will have common critical dimensions

This is a good thing for air cylinder users as suppliers may change leaving you without a vendor for an air specific air cylinder. An ISO-6432 non-repairable air cylinder from a different manufacturer may not look the same as the one you are trying to replace, but the new cylinder should fit the same footprint as the old one.

Since ISO is a European organization, and Europe has standardized on the metric system, all ISO cylinders will have metric dimensions. The cylinder bore and rod diameter will be measure in millimeters. The port sizes, rod thread and mounting thread sizes will be metric.

This brings a level of complexity to the workplace where a non-repairable cylinder may have North American roots and Imperial dimensions.

If you are trying to replace a non-repairable cylinder of North American manufacture with an ISO style (they may even look similar) you will have footprint and thread issues.

Know that NPT fittings normally do not work in metric ports, though some fitting manufacturers suggest that they have a universal (NPT and Metric) line of air fittings. For more information on fittings, please see this link.

When you've located your metric fittings for the ISO 6432 cylinder, the air line tube sizes that normally fit those metric fittings will be 4mm, 6mm, 8mm and larger.

The 1/4" P.E. tube that is almost the standard for machinery in North America, will not work be usable in a metric fitting, unless – and only perhaps – the part of the fitting that connects to the tube is a barb. In that case, you might just be able to connect a metric fitting to a 1/4" P.E. tube. Good luck with that!
